Last spring's mystery bird
Aug. 1st, 2010 09:57 amLeft out of the bird pictures from last spring was this mystery bird:

I finally dug around in my bird books and identified it. It's a Yellow-rumped Warbler.

Hummingbirds and Not Hummingbirds
Jul. 31st, 2010 10:04 amWhile on vacation at my in-laws place in Tennessee this month, I watched lots of ruby-throated humming birds come to the feeder and flowers on her back porch. The males would chase each other and all the females away from the feeder; it was a wonder they got any chance to feed themselves because they seemed to spend all their time chasing. The females would swoop in and feed while the males were off chasing someone; it was entertaining to watch.

Birds of Spring at the Park, March 6
Mar. 27th, 2010 09:36 amBack on March 6 we took a turn around the park, seeing who had come back for spring. Like with the upcoming zoo pictures, I'll try to only show pictures of new birds and individuals and situations, not more of the same-old, same-old.
( More swans, of course )

Identifying Seagulls
Mar. 25th, 2010 09:16 pmI got a nice bird guide ("National Geographic Complete Birds of North America") for a belated Christmas present last month. Now I have a modern bird guide that includes Eastern North America. (I previously got a field guide to Western Birds while I was out in California.) In conjunction with a digital camera, I can identify a lot more birds--I tend to have a hard time remembering all the pertinent details of a quick flash of feathers going by.

I want a new duck
Feb. 15th, 2010 04:07 pmYesterday, we saw a new duck at the park, one that looked wild, but not immediately identifiable.

Mystery Goose
Feb. 7th, 2010 10:07 amYesterday, we went for a brief walk in the park--a walk that turned out much briefer than we planned, due to the gust front blowing in and chilling the place down with icy winds and lowering dark gray clouds. After feeding the usual suspects, we saw an unusual goose along the shore of the swamp pond. It was much too trim and shy to be one of the big domestic geese; I suspected it to be a wild visitor, like the Canadas that drop by.

Birds at the Park, January 31
Feb. 3rd, 2010 07:25 pmOur cygnets have almost grown up, and there are hints that spring is not far away.

January 9 was bitterly cold, down in the upper 20s/lower 30s. (For here, that's cold. I know about you people up north.) I was worried slightly concerned that the birds would be hungry for lack of park-goers to feed them.
I need not have worried. Apparently rain keeps people away, not cold. Several people were out feeding the birds large bags of bread. I found the cygnets, almost grown now, being feed by a nice lady with a whole bag of crumbs.

Birds at the Park, January 1
Jan. 2nd, 2010 06:29 pmHappy New Year!
New Year's day, the whole family went to the park. It was quite cold, and the birds were very hungry. The seagulls attacked in swarms and frenzied whenever there was bread in sight. (This was the first visit I was very glad I was wearing a hat--and I had to wash it afterwards).

Birds at the Park, December 26
Jan. 2nd, 2010 05:15 pmHappy New Year!
The day after Christmas, we took our left-over bread and went to visit the swans and other birds. This time, we looked for the swans ashore, first--and found them.

Birds at the Park, December 24
Dec. 25th, 2009 02:52 pmMerry Christmas, everyone!
Almost caught up now. Yesterday, we took stale bread to the park and fed the birds again. There's one particular corner of the park where the geese hang out, and are spoiled rotten. They are used to being fed, and get rather demanding about it. So do the seagulls and the ibises.
